Kommentar: The author’s last contribution to the literature of art, in which he explained the evolution during some ten centuries of the art of painting or illuminating books, illustrating his text with a carefully chosen selection of some of the most beautiful specimens of the illuminator’s art in the Bibliotheque Nationale. The book is divided into seven periods: Byzantine, Carolingian, Monastic and appearance of secular artists, Great French Epoch, Charles V, the Schools of Bourgogne and Touraine and finally the last eclat and decadence.The plates provide some 125 illustrations, including pages from several of the world’s finest manuscripts.
