Kommentar: S. Urban was originally a pseudonym for Edward Cave (1691-1754), founder of G. M. The title page boasts the following contents: Proceedings and Debates in Parliament; Essays, Controversial, Humorous, and Satirical, Religious, Moral, and Political; Selected Pieces of Poetry; Asuccinct Account of the most remarkable Transactions Foreign and Domestick; Births, Marriages, Deaths, Promotions, and Bankrupts; The Prices of Goods and Stocks, Bill of Mortality; Register of Books. Gentleman’s Magazine (1731-1922) was an extremely popular monthly periodical in its hayday in the 18th century. It was intended to cover every topic of interest to the public in one handy publication. It made Cave rise from very humble beginnings to becoming a rich man at the end of his life. Samuel Johnson was a frequent contributor.
